How Bush and the press have made Iraq disappear.

I’ve been on conservative talk radio a few times in the past few weeks and all they want to talk about is how amazing and successful the surge is. But the real accomplishment of the surge was in prolonging the occupation, just at the point when the American public had grown so fed-up they were getting ready to pull the plug. In this sense the surge has been an absolute unequivocal success: it was designed to keep American troops in Iraq until the next president and that is exactly what it has achieved.
